Our guest post today comes from Dr. Paul Guinther, PhD, Clinical Psychologist at Urban Counseling Collective. You can read more about his areas of expertise along with our other clinician profiles here.
As a clinician and in my personal life, I’m always looking for new ways to be motivated by love rather than fear. As such, I thought it might be fruitful to learn more about inspiration. I started off with looking up the etymology of inspiration, then hit upon some quotes on inspiration, which I thought was a fun twist on inspirational quotes! A few themes emerged regarding ways to inspire others, so I thought I’d collect them together here to share with you. By reading this you are showing your dedication to helping others – thank you!
#1 Inspiring Through Story
People are natural storytellers. From tales of Atlantis to parables of the Bible to Iron Man, human history is riddled with inspiring stories of struggle, triumph, and beauty. Our history itself is an amazing story! Creating, learning, and sharing deeply human stories is a great way to participate in creating a culture where we all feel a bit more inspired. Don’t forget your own personal story!
Inspiration can come to us at any time and from many sources..... The story of someone who has succeeded in spite of difficulty can stir our emotions. - Jim Rohn
The stories of past courage can define that ingredient - they can teach, they can offer hope, they can provide inspiration. - Rock Bankole
I can write all I want, but sometimes, the most inspirational thoughts simply come from looking at how others have done it. - Christian Olsen
Heroes give us inspiration, they fuel us, and we reference them in our minds when thinking of decisions, possibilities, and direction in our lives. - Sarah Bowling
#2 Inspiring Through Communication
We humans are at our best when we maintain healthy connections and community. A great way to do this is to learn to be more assertive and use positive communication skills. Assertive communication is inspiring and brings people together because it involves talking about what you are for rather than arguing about what you are against. By sticking up for what you believe in rather than shutting others down, people will be much clearer about your message without feeling attacked. People who feel safe and connected will be much more willing to explore the world with you.
You can force people to obey; you cannot force them to understand. - Confucious
Confident people inspire other people with the sheer power of reliable communication. - Kellie Sullivann
Rewards can inspire others to action while punishment motivates others negatively. Negative motivation is pressure or force and makes a person resent what he is doing, taking away from success motivation. Dorothy Wehunt
Therefore, no one can take you down his or her path and similarly you cannot lead somebody else down yours. All we can do is simply inspire others to listen and develop their intuition by listening and following ours. - Michael Hetherington
#3 Inspiring Through Vision
Communicating a story about a future you believe in, and want to help build now, is a great way to inspire others. We are often so motivated to reduce consciousness of pain and suffering that we lose sight of our values and the better world we want to create. Cultivating willingness to feel the pain stemming from the past or present absence of what you care about is a great way to clarify your vision for the future, since we only hurt where we care. Where there is willingness, there is a way.
I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
If you have dreams or goals in life, reaching them becomes necessary. They become important, not only to provide for your family but to inspire and set a good example for your child. - S. J. Baker
There is no coming to consciousness without pain. - Carl Jung
Where there is no vision, the people won't follow. Vision for a better future is the great motivator. Hans Finzel
#4 Inspiring Through Encouragement
Facing fears shows great courage and is worth celebrating. Acknowledging and declaring that what someone is doing is difficult and part of something that matters is a great way to boost their morale. Appreciation, gratitude, and support for people’s values-based actions helps them bring even more good things to life.
I don’t need to be inspired any longer, just supported. - Kurt Cobain
We either inspire or are inspired by others. In other words, some people give you confidence; when you are depressed, they encourage you. Then there are others, who pull you down. But only those people become successful who master the art of building up others. - Joginder Singh
A leader isn't someone who forces others to make him stronger; a leader is someone willing to give his strength to others so that they may have the strength to stand on their own. - Beth Revis
Average leaders raise the bar on themselves; good leaders raise the bar for others; great leaders inspire others to raise their own bar. - Orrin Woodward
#5 Inspiring Through Vulnerability
Strength is most fully expressed in vulnerability. Some of the most beautiful artistic performances involve a person stripping themselves naked of all defenses and fully showing up to the world truly and wholly as they are, warts and all. We are often afraid to act alone, but someone choosing to transcend fears of judgment through full expression can lead the way for more people to unlock their own full potential.
Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path. - Brené Brown
To share your weakness is to make yourself vulnerable; to make yourself vulnerable is to show your strength. - Criss Jami
When you share your experiences with other people, you help take away their fears. Rick Warren
A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others. - Salvador Dali
#6 Inspiring Through Work
People can dismiss pipe dreams, but it’s hard to ignore someone actually giving their life over to something they really believe in through hard work. While making positive contributions through achievements sends the message that we can make the world a better place, seeing someone persist through repeated failures and hardships can be greatly inspiring in and of itself.
When you embrace your strengths and start to make something out of what you have, then you also begin to be an inspiration to others. - Jennifer N. Smith
Finding inspiration in the success of others is a common way to find motivation to follow through on your goals. - Ronald Valentino
When you invest money in an item, you are motivated to use it, and your willingness to learn will inspire others around you to offer their help. - Marie Clapsaddle
Study to be inspired -- and to inspire. Michael Caputo
Even though I didn't feel like I had much to show yet, I was still an inspiration because my persistence at fighting for my dreams was encouraging to others. - Tamara Rasheed
